Traffic Accidents in the City of Colorado Springs
Sunday, October 11, 2009 1:25 PM [RELEASE AT WILL]:
During the thirty (30) hour time period between 6:00AM Saturday October 10, 2009 and today at noon, the CSPD received reports of 282 traffic accidents. Of those, officers responded to 151 crashes. Because the CSPD was on "accident alert" during most of that time period, there are countless other crashes that occurred where motorists exchanged information and did not contact authorities. Also during that time frame, CSPD officers responded to 69 reports of traffic hazards, such as vehicles that were unable to negotiate the roadways and were blocking or otherwise obstructing traffic.
Icy and perilous roadway conditions continue today, and the streets and highways, with particular emphasis on side streets, are expected to be particularly hazardous tonight after sundown. Travel is not recommended unless it is imperative, and any other updates about significant roadway hazards or closures will be provided to the public and the media when appropriate.
At the time of this release, the CSPD continues to be on "accident alert" status, meaning that if anyone is involved in a traffic accident where the vehicles are still drivable, and none of the involved drivers are suspected of impaired driving, and no occupants of the vehicles are injured, motorists may exchange information and prepare a cold report within 72 hours of the crash.
