Waldo Canyon Fire Limited Update

Wednesday, September 12, 2012 4:00 PM [RELEASE AT WILL]

SPECIAL NOTE:   While the investigation into the Waldo Canyon Fire is on-going, and certain information must remain confidential in order to protect the integrity of the investigation, we thought it was important to share what we have learned to date, with our community.

Initial reports of smoke were received on the evening of Friday, June 22, 2012.  There was a fire ban in effect at that time. While we will not provide an exact point of origin, we can say that it is within three miles of the Waldo Canyon Trailhead.

The investigation into the origin and cause has concluded that the Waldo Canyon Fire was “human caused,” but the investigation has yet to determine if it was accidental or intentional.

At this point, efforts are being concentrated on who was responsible for the fire.

A “person of interest” has not been identified but we are asking for anyone who remembers being in the area, to call and provide us with any information you may have.  We realize that someone may have accidentally started this fire and is afraid to come forward.  Please call us to share your story.

Nearly 400 tips were placed into our Tip Line.  Those thought to be the most crucial were handled as a priority with follow-up still being conducted on the remainder.

Investigators assigned to the Task Force continue to move forward with their efforts.
