One Year Anniversary - Homicide Victim

SPECIAL NOTE:  The following text is from the Press Release sent out last year.  This is the 1 year anniversary of Mr. Johnnie Carlos Martinez’s death.

On 9-14-2011 at approximately 9:00 am the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) was dispatched to Dorchester Park to investigate an assault.  Upon arrival officers learned an adult homeless male had been hit repeatedly while he slept on the playground equipment in the park. 

The victim was attacked the previous night {September 13th} at 11:00 pm.  The assault was reported to police by a third party the next day.  The victim’s injuries were severe and he was hospitalized due to the injuries.  The CSPD Homicide Unit responded to assist with the investigation.

On September 22 at 1:35 pm the victim succumbed to his injuries.  The El Paso County Coroner’s Office completed an autopsy and ruled the manner of death a homicide due to blunt force trauma.  The CSPD Homicide Unit continues to investigate this case, but has little information about the suspects at this point other than they may be two Hispanic males.  The victim is identified as 47 year old JohnCarlos Martinez.

This is the 22nd homicide in Colorado Springs this year.  There were 17 homicides this time last year.
