The City of Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak Art Council (PPAC) invite the community to participate in the first ever Arts Walk with Mayor Bach on Wednesday, June 13 from 5 – 6 p.m. The walk will begin at the City Administration Building, 30 South Nevada Avenue, and the group will take a pleasant stroll to see eight murals in the downtown area.
A series of Arts Walks with the Mayor will take place in the summer 2012 and will help promote physical fitness, give the public an opportunity to interact informally with Mayor Bach, and create awareness of the role of public art in creating a sense of community in Colorado Springs. By creating beautiful public spaces, public art can enhance the economic life of a community and is an essential part of any economic revitalization plan. Arts Walks with the Mayor will be held on July 25, August 29, and September 19.
This first Arts Walk with the Mayor will highlight the rich resource of murals in Colorado Springs. Participants will see and hear explanations about the beautiful mural art painted on interior spaces at the Terry R. Harris Judicial Complex and the City Auditorium, and outdoor murals, including two Sister Cities murals, one at Centennial Hall, and another on the Pikes Peak Building. In addition, the tour will include the mural on the wall of the Giddings Building, the Mozart mural at Cascade and Pikes Peak, and the mural on the south wall of Ecumenical Social Ministries at Bijou and Weber. The mural depicting the History of Transportation in the Pikes Peak Region, painted on an inside wall of the City Bus Terminal at Kiowa and Nevada, is a must-see for any art lover.
The Cultural Office of the Pikes Peak Region (COPPeR) will launch a new Public Art Directory June 6 on PeakRadar.com, COPPeR’s website about arts and culture events. This directory can be used to find information about all the public art in the City of Colorado Springs’ and El Paso County’s collections. Information will include images, location and artists. More public art listings from throughout the region will be added in the coming months.
