TAKE 25 Make Time to talk about Child Safety

Monday, May 21, 2012 3:00 PM [RELEASE AT WILL]

25 Minutes of Prevention can make a difference in a child’s life!

This year, officers and investigators have responded to several reports of children being approached by someone they did not know.  During the majority of these encounters, the child was asked to get into the suspect’s vehicle, which could have proved dangerous.

With school ending for summer recess and the anticipation of children playing outdoors, it is important that parents spend time with their children discussing tips to help keep them safe. The fact is that potential risks children face throughout their lives can be lessened when parents and guardians teach safety concepts.

On Friday, May 25th, from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm in partnership with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, Kidpower, Colorado Springs Police Department and the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office; the 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office will host an exciting and informative “Take 25” Child Safety Fair at 105 E. Vermijo Avenue.

Take 25is a preventive child safety campaign designed to raise awareness of the issues surrounding missing and exploited children.  With a focus on prevention, this campaign encourages parents, guardians, educators and others to take 25 minutes to talk to children about safety.

The Take 25 Child Safety Fair will provide parents with hand-outs outlining simple and effective safety messages to share with their children. This event promises to be uplifting and life-saving with McGruff entertaining the kids and Fingerprinting and Photographs completed on site.  Chick-Fil-A will be serving their delicious food – for free!

In addition, from May 25 – June 25, Kidpower is offering at no cost through its website the “Kidpower 30-Skill Challenge which provides parents simple yet powerful safety skills to discuss and practice with children. Visit www.kidpowercs.org.
