Hazardous Materials Found at 3214 N. Chestnut Street


Colorado Springs, CO - Colorado Springs Fire Department firefighters were dispatched to a report of an obvious death at 3214 N. Chestnut Street on August 1, 2011. The first fire engine arrived shortly after 3:00pm MST. A CSFD paramedic entered the apartment to confirm the death and returned back with information that there was a hazardous material present. Immediately the CSFD hazmat crews were called to the scene. They found powder in and around an open bottle labeled "Sodium Cyanide?.

 

One CSFD paramedic, one CSPD officer, two AMR personnel and two apartment personnel were taken to a local hospital as a precautionary measure for exposure to the substance. All were treated and released with no health complications as a result of the exposure.

 

CSFD responded with one fire engine, the hazardous materials truck and the decontamination unit. There were eighteen firefighters working on this incident. No evacuations were necessary and all residents at the complex were safe. The cause of death is unknown at this time. The El Paso County Coroner will be performing an autopsy of the body and will report results as they are available.
