The City of Colorado Springs, the Downtown Development Authority, the United States Olympic Committee and the Colorado Springs Sports Corporation will stage a gala Olympic Downtown Celebration on the evening of Friday, February 7, beginning at 5:00 p.m. to celebrate the opening of the XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.

The highlight of the evening will be the NBC broadcast of the Opening Ceremony from Sochi on a 17-foot wide LCD television unit on Tejon Street just south of Platte Avenue, where spectators can enjoy the magnificent opening ceremonies and the arrival of the powerful 245-athlete United States Olympic Team at the 40,000-seat Fisht Olympic Stadium, which will also be the venue for the Closing Ceremony of the Games on February 23.  

Sochi Olympic Downtown Celebration, Colorado Springs

  • Location: Tejon Street from Platte Ave. to Pikes Peak Ave.
  • KOAA live broadcast of the evening news 5:00-7:00
  • Broadcast of the Sochi Olympic Opening Ceremony on a 17 foot wide LCD television starting at 7:00 until the end of the ceremony on Tejon south of Platte Ave
  • Ceremonial lighting of the Olympic Cauldron
  • Snowmobile jumping shows on Tejon Street throughout the evening courtesy of Kathy and Sam Guadagnoli, successful downtown business owners and longtime supporters of downtown sports events including previous Olympic Downtown Celebrations and the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Fan Fest.
  • Short & Sweet Downtown Dash family fun glow run registration opens at 5:00 with the 1-mile run starting at 6:00 pm from Bijou between Tejon and Cascade.  All runners should where items that glow, blink and flash or pick something up from Zeezo’s.  At the end of the run very runner gets a free cup of hot chocolate courtesy of Orchard Ovens Bakery (click on link to register)
  • First Friday Art Walk displays and activities at participating studios
  • Live music in the streets by Austin Young from 5:00-7:00 and Grant Sabin from 7:00-9:00
  • Dog sled demonstrations and community fun zone in Acacia Park.
  • Budweiser Beer Garden
  • AT&T and McDonald’s activity areas
  • Flying Ace trampoline performances throughout the evening
  • Sports booths and activities on Tejon Street between Bijou and Kiowa
  • Ice Climbing demonstrations at City Rock Gym
  • Sales and specials from downtown merchants
  • Cocktail contest starting Feb 7 – 23, in participating downtown establishments
  • Warming stations will be scattered throughout the streets
  • Everyone is encouraged to dress in red, white and blue to show support for our Olympic athletes
  • Ample parking is available at parking ramps within the ODC area
