Gourds

Patricia was born in Pasadena, CA and raised in southern California. She graduated from California State University Long Beach with a BFA degree in Interior Design. Her training in art was a part of the background for design degree. She has done sales and commercial interior design in Wyoming and also Northern California.

While living on the beach in Santa Cruz, California she started painting nautical pieces. In the early 1990s she and her husband relocated to Sedona, Arizona where she worked as a manager for 3 gallery/gift shops. The beauty of the southwest inspired her to develop her talents as an artist even further. She was fascinated by the incredible lighting and saturation of color found in red rock country.

She has worked in watercolor and acrylics but prefers oil on canvas. She has painted on leather, wood and even on gourds. Her style is realistic. She has an enthusiasm for textures both with the paint application and visually with color. She is an award-winning artist. Her paintings have been sold through galleries is Scottsdale and Sedona, Arizona and Woodland Park, Co and commissioned pieces are held in public and private collections around the country.

Artist Statement

Painting is my way of meditating.
When I am working on a canvas that is all that exists for me.
I feel like I am channeling universal creativity.
I love the texture of the paint and the visual texture that color creates.
Life is my inspiration.

Kathy

I have always loved arts and crafts since my grandmother taught me to crochet when I was a child. I was the only grandchild that took to the craft so she spent extra time with me teaching me the technique. I will always have those special memories of her. Over the years I have tried and enjoyed many arts and crafts that include beading, stained glass, jewelry, crocheting, knitting and many more. My husband is retired and I am semi retired and we were looking for something we could do together. That's when we found mosaics! We are both very excited about the art. We enjoy exploring garage sells and second hand stores searching for unusual items to mosaic and gathering our tiles, glass, beads, china and other materials that we use to transform our items into beautiful works of mosaic art. Working with mosaics has been an adventurous and enjoyable experience for both of us.

Dan

I was born and raised in Pueblo, CO and part of my heritage is the Native American Culture. I feel the spirit of the earth, the animals and other forms of nature and some of my mosaic art is a tribute to my ancestors. I feel in this way I can preserve our past and keep our rich history forever living. My wife also enjoys this medium and we enjoy traveling to find many unusual items to create our mosaic art. Together we continue to explore the exciting world of mosaics and share our passion for this art form.

Watercolor Painting

My name is Ashley Conroy and I have been creating art from the time I was small. It has been a rewarding pursuit; creativity is a fuel for me. After receiving a BA in studio arts from the University of Colorado, I have been lucky enough to have shown my work in a number of galleries and spaces around Colorado.

My artwork always contains an element of movement and energy. I am often inspired by nature, music and emotion. Many of my paintings are created with a drip technique (made famous by Jackson Pollock) using a stir stick and fluid acrylic. Sometimes I will use other tools and techniques as well.

As an artist I am wanting to continue to grow and explore new stules and subjects. Art has always been a part of my life and has been a source of great joy, imagingation, focus and education. It is a process that humbles me and I believe is good for the soul. I hope that my work is a reflection of that in some way.

Watercolor Painting

Marakai is a painter who received her Masters Degree of Fine Arts from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Her work has been exhibited locally, nationally and internationally. She has taught painting and drawing at Carnegie-Mellon University, Weber Sate University, West Texas State University and currently teaches drawing at Colorado State University in Pueblo.

The watercolors shown in this exhibition are painted in a technique called veil-painting. The result is a soft mystical light prompting the viewer to open into personal contemplation and meditation. These paintings represent a part of a series of twelve that were completed during a year long investigation of light based in the esoteric color lectures of Rudolph Steiner.

"I had to think backwards and upside-down to learn the technique of veil painting. My background is in oils where, like an architect, I would build the heavy bodied oils from dark to light to create an illusion of three-dimensional form. In watercolor however, I had to work very gradually from light to dark creating atmosphere. In both mediums, the result is communicating a feeling through the illusion of space and color another dimension of light".

Oil Painting

Brenda grew up in Calgary, Alberta and that is why I spell color, colour. After raising her 3 sons, she decided to pursue a passion of painting. She found that painting requires continual growth and she accomplishes this by attending art classes and workshops.

She grows by connecting with other artists. She particularly enjoys working with oils. Brenda loves skyscapes and nature. She believes, "The heavens declare the glory of God". This is where she gets her inspiration. She also finds inspiration with still lifes, gardens, photography and, of course, colour and bold brush strokes. She calls herself "an expressionist" with colour. She loves to paint outdoors when weather permits.

Brenda currently has a working studio in her home here in Colorado Springs. When asked "Why?", she replies, "This is how I saw it!"

Stained Glass

I have always loved art. My father was an artist so its not a surprise that I ended up being one myself. After graduating high school and getting married, I got a job decorating cakes. Once I started having children, I wanted to contribute to our income and still be able to be a part of my children's lives. I have also been interested in crochet and sewing, so I started making items to sell at local craft shows. My first publication was a crochet pattern in Annie's Attic. I wanted to try lots of different media so what I was making and selling changed all the time. I started working with bread-dough until all the ornaments I kept for us got ruined one year. I switched to ceramics, which actually turned out to be much messier than bread-dough. Next I discovered Friendly Plastic, and polymer clay. That led me into the craft industry. I became a Certified Professional Demonstrator by the now defunct Hobby Industry Association and had several designs published in craft books and magazines. I added rubber stamping and was a Stampin' Up demonstrator for a few of years. That was followed by paper crafting, and then glass etching. Since craft magazine editors kept telling me to "dumb down" my designs, I decided to take a break and further my art education by going back to school. I had so much fun taking these new classes; watercolor, figure and other drawing classes.

All the time, I wanted something would hold color better. The watercolor would wind up fading... I had always wanted to work with glass but had never tried it. I had seen someone make a glass sculpture and had been flabbergasted. As a teen, I made things with melted plastic cups, thinking it would be similar to melting glass. I bought my first lampworking set up from a catalog and then things started progressing rather quickly. Today, I get to do what I've always wanted to do. I make lampwork beads, I fuse glass, I slump glass, I create original stained glass pieces. I also make beaded jewelry with my lampwork beads. I love working with all the brightly colored glass to making new beads and compose fused and stained pieces in my studio. There is almost nothing as exciting as going out to the studio the morning after a firing and opening the kiln to see what surprises it holds for me!

Oil Painting

As my paintings have been evolving, I think about how they have become a metaphor for life. Up close these paintings take on an abstract quality. Energized brush strokes of bold color amongst grayed hues splashed over the surface. As you back away all is revealed. The bold strokes become a creek bed, flowing water, vast canyons or local landscapes.

Sometimes we get stuck in our lives. We're too close to see the whole of it. If we can just step back, get a clear perspective, we'd see the beauty in all the moments. They blend together, the good, the bad and the ugly, creating this beautiful existence we call life.

I encourage you to step back. Don't view one stroke; take in the wholeness of it all.

Art for me is dancing with my brush, playing with the paint and falling in love all over again. It is a wonderful thing to be an artist; to let my heart and soul travel through my brush.
