Tom?s ceramic work has been indelibly influenced by having lived and worked in Japan as a ceramic artist for thirteen years. Growing up as the son of a ceramist, he has been surrounded by clay all of his life. His mother started working in clay when he was in pre-school, and she would often take him to her lessons rather than hire a babysitter. From an early age he absorbed the vocabulary of clay, but it wasn?t until he had the opportunity to travel to Kyoto after graduating from the University of Colorado that he realized ceramics would form his life?s work. In Japan he apprenticed with respected masters and studied the art of ancient craftsmen in museums.

He built his first wood-fired kiln in the mountainous Tamba region north of Osaka, joining a ceramic tradition stretching back 800 years. At this time his artistic career began to fully blossom as he exhibited his work in numerous solo exhibitions at top venues throughout Japan including the Takashimaya Department Store Galleries in Tokyo and Osaka. He was accepted three times into the prestigious Japanese National Exhibition of Crafts, which only a handful of foreigners have accomplished. His work is in the permanent collection of the Ohara Museum of Art in Kobe, and in many private Japanese and American collections. He appeared numerous times on Japanese television, and in many newspaper and magazine articles. He returned to the United States in 1993, but he often returns to Japan to exhibit his artwork and to renew his appreciation of the art, culture and aesthetics. His studio is in Boulder where he works alone, living between countries, cultures and traditions. His vessels represent a path between those borders that have been touched by different influences in time and space.

In the last few years he has been casting pieces in bronze, which flow from his work in clay and having been influenced by the Orient and its aesthetics for over thirty years. Tom?s work is represented in Santa Fe at the Northern New Mexico Art Catalogue Gallery and in Jackson Hole, Wyoming at Horizon Fine Art.

My inspiration comes from the beauty of the world, whether it be the intricate delicacy of a wildflower to the majesty of the nearby mountains. I believe that this world is truly a gift from God, and that He has blessed me with the desire to explore and make art?which in some small way, allows me to reflect and to honor the awe and wonder of His creation through my own contributions.

My paintings are created using mixed media: they may include (but are not limited to) inks, found objects, art papers, soft pastels, and various types of acrylics. Color, form, shape, and depth are very important to me in the work I do. I look for materials that glow; that lift off from the canvas and bring the viewer in. In landscapes I explore shapes and forms that intrigue the viewer, colors that evoke feeling, and an abstraction that leaves one with more a feel for the place without presenting the detail that can be found in a photograph. In nonobjective pieces I work from a few basic structures, then allow the media to drive certain of my creative decisions, bearing in mind basic design principles of line and form, together with light and dark, cool and warm. Sometimes pathways emerge and figures are seen. Other times the viewer is drawn to textures. Often light and calligraphic elements weave through the background forms, providing movement and energy.

The Palmer Lake Art Group (PLAG), located in Palmer Lake, Colorado, was incorporated in 1968 as a non-profit organization of artists and crafters, including anyone who appreciates art and who is interested in furthering the arts in our local community and region. Members and guests enjoy fellowship and networking as well as educational and exhibiting opportunities. Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of every month, except July. PLAG sponsors two art shows, winter and spring, held at various locations around the region, and a Christmas Craft Fair the first weekend of October every year.

This year, PLAG decided to do a themed show : "Take Flight" It's interesting how each artist has interpreted this theme, from the very literal, realism to abstract. Each piece in this exhibition is as different and unique as the artists that painted them! We hope that all who view this exhibition enjoy the experience, as their imaginations 'take flight'!

Garden of the Gods Park, with its vertical red rocks and Pikes Peak views, is recognized worldwide as an iconic landmark of the American West.

Three of North America's major ecosystems converge within the Park's boundaries. Its varied geologic rock formations reveal one of the most extensive displays of earth history found anywhere.

Garden of the Gods Park is nationally known as a cultural crossroads where American Indians, explorers, "Pikes Peak or Bust" gold-seekers, railroad builders, homesteaders and health seekers all were drawn to the red rock formations that mark the dramatic meeting place of the Great Plains with the Rocky Mountains.

The Garden of the Gods Park is celebrating 100 years as a city park this year. First given to the City of Colorado Springs in 1909, this unique National Natural Landmark was a grand Christmas gift. It is still a FREE major attraction within the City of Colorado Springs. It is our hope that you will take some time to enjoy the Garden of the Gods and see this national treasure through the eyes of our local youth. As part of the celebration, youth from ages 5 ? 18 were encouraged to enter the Garden of the Gods Art Contest. Some of the entries are displayed for your viewing pleasure.

Image of Sculpture

My earliest memories are of playing with dirt and making 'mud pies' on my Grandma's farm when I was three years old. I?m still creating with 'dirt' aka earthenware clay!

My thirty year career in art has taken on many guises in design, architecture and construction. However, I always seem to return to clay and 3-D renditions of whimsy and color. The ability of color and humor to cheer people has always fascinated me. After living and working for a year in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, I became enamored with fish and sea life as well as the endless colors of the sea. I was definitely impressed with the fearless use of color of the Mexican artists.

I have begun to combine different materials in my sculptures to create a 'story' for the piece. I use the clay and color of overlapping glazes and lusters in multi-firings in an oxidation kiln to achieve these artistic goals.

I definitely believe that art should make you smile, and if you are viewing my work, I hope that you are!

More of my work can be seen at the Commonwheel Labor Day Art Show in Manitou Springs, CO.

Photo of Garden of the Gods

Ricardo is 53 years old and has lived in Colorado Springs for about 45 years and loves this place. He's traveled through most of our wonderful country and has yet to see anywhere with a total package that offers as much as Colorado Springs.

About three years ago, Ricardo woke up early, went to the Garden of the Gods and took some of the best pictures that he's ever seen of the place. Since that time he's been working to build his portfolio and the infrastructure needed to market them. He has received lots of positive feedback and many of his photos have been juried into art exhibits. Ricardo has a very good portfolio and believes that he's on the edge of great success in the field.

Whether he makes lots or little money from the craft, he's still gained lots by becoming a nature photographer. Living in Colorado Springs so long made it easy to take the beautiful scenery and climate for granted. It's been a real awakening to see the beauty that surrounds we who live in the shadow of Pikes Peak through the eyes of a photographer.

His mission is to help others to see that beauty as well. You can judge for yourself how well Ricardo has been doing in accomplishing the mission of capturing the beauty of nature in great images by going to greatscenicphotos.com.

Poetry While You Wait, a program of the Pikes Peak Poet Laureate Project, celebrates poetry in our region by placing work from local authors in areas where people wait. Aaron Anstett, our current Poet Laureate, selected 40 poems by local authors from over 1,000 submitted. These poems have been published in a book, on table tents, and on posters for distribution to waiting areas (such as doctors and dentists offices, coffee shops, hairdressers, etc.) throughout the Pikes Peak region. Daily in April, KRCC broadcast the poems read by their authors. Additionally, videos of the poets will be on the Pikes Peak Library District web site and the text of all the poems is on the Project's web site (PikesPeakPoetLaureate.Org.)

Image of Art Work

Nietzsche once said, "The purpose of art is to prevent reality from destroying us." When my reality threatened to destroy me, I turned to art. I had minored in art in college and had always been interested in it, but it wasn?t until 1999 when I saw an ad for a collage class that I took the plunge headlong into art.

Having lived a military family's peripatetic lifestyle my whole life, we moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado, in 1996 and being weary of moving, just decided to stay here.

I have studied collage and painting with Gwen Fox since that first inspiring collage class. I rented my first studio in 2000, in part so I could officially call myself an artist, and currently have a studio at Cottonwood Center for the Arts where I enjoy the company of 80 other working artists.

I have exhibited in numerous shows in the area, including two solo shows, and several two-women shows. My work is in collections across the country and I am currently represented by the Modbo Gallery in Colorado Springs.
