Citizen, City teamwork leads to capture of kidnapping suspect

A phone call from an alert citizen focused Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) response and led to the arrest of an alleged kidnapper. The good Samaritan located a person matching the description of the suspect, Jose Garcia, at a downtown convenience store and alerted police to his movements. Within minutes a CSPD patrol officer arrested the suspect, ending a nearly 24-hour manhunt.
The citizen’s heady call, combined with police response and the brave actions of the nine-year-old victim in the case, helped end the violent chapter, which began the day before. As you may recall, while walking home from school, the 9 year old victim was kidnapped. An Amber Alert was issued and law enforcement officers began a search.
Shortly before 9 a.m. the next day, a 9-1-1 call was received from the victim, who was in an area convenience store. The alleged kidnapper fled the scene on foot when he realized the victim had called for help. FBI agents, patrol officers, K-9 officer and Tactical Enforcement Unit officers responded quickly to protect the victim and capture Garcia.
Cascade SmartScape Challenge
The City of Colorado Springs is seeking regional talent to compete in the Cascade SmartScape Challenge sponsored by Xerox. Led by City Councilmember Brandy Williams and Mayor Bach’s Streetscape Solutions Team Leader Dave Munger, the competition seeks to recruit local professionals to help create a streetscape design concept for the future. The demonstration’s goal is to enhance our community and beautify a central location in downtown Colorado Springs while demonstrating environmental and financial sustainability. The median on Cascade Avenue between Pikes Peak Avenue and Colorado Avenue will be redesigned as a result of this community competition. More Details...
